What does WEMO mean for you?
For me, WEMO is an employer that has given me many opportunities in my career, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. I go to work every day with enthusiasm, especially because every day can be both challenging and varied. Having been here for quite some time now, I really feel at home and hope to stay here for many years to come.
Why did you choose WEMO 11 years ago?
I’ve been working at WEMO for 11 years now. I originally earned my qualifications in automotive technology and worked for four years at Ford van Berkel. However, I realized that I no longer enjoyed spending every day covered in oil and grease. Around that time, I met my now-wife, and through her father, who worked in construction with metal stud profiles and plasterboard, I got the chance to tag along with him.
After helping him out a few times, it became clear to me: I would leave my job as a car mechanic and transition into construction. I found it incredibly rewarding to transform an empty space into a fully functional home, complete with ceilings, stairwells, partitions, and even fireproof walls. After six years in construction, I unfortunately experienced a serious workplace accident. After three surgeries and three months of rehabilitation, I was able to return to work but found that I couldn’t do everything I used to do.
Additionally, the long commutes to places like Amsterdam and The Hague began to wear on me. After discussing it at home, I decided to look for a job closer to where I live. My father, who worked at WEMO, suggested I apply there. They were looking for someone who could assist in both the warehouse and assembly. What struck me immediately during the interview was how clean and organized everything was, even though they were working hard with what, at the time, seemed like impressively large metal parts. I was instantly impressed and knew I wanted to work there—and fortunately, I got the chance!
What have been the highlights (or milestones) of your career at WEMO?
The highlights of my career at WEMO are the opportunities and trust I’ve been given. I started as a helper/cleaner, progressed to warehouse employee, then moved on to become a buyer, and eventually became the planner for the assembly team.
In addition to work-related milestones, the company parties and team outings have also been highlights. They’re always well-organized and create a strong sense of connection among colleagues.
Why is WEMO still a great employer after all these years?
As a planner, I have a very diverse job, which ensures that I’m never doing the same thing all day—something I really appreciate. I interact with many different departments, including purchasing, production, care, the warehouse, assembly, and engineering. Being involved in so many areas keeps my work interesting and enjoyable.
What I also really value is that WEMO places a lot of trust in its employees, giving them significant responsibility. That trust motivates me to give 100% every day.
What makes the work environment at WEMO unique, and what attracts people to stay?
One unique aspect of WEMO is its clean and organized assembly and factory halls, which is a huge plus. Additionally, WEMO places people at the center of its operations. There’s very little hierarchy, and everyone is treated as equals.
The opportunities offered and the support provided to employees are also big factors in making WEMO a great place to work. It’s worth noting that some colleagues have been here for over 40 years without ever considering leaving—that speaks volumes about how well WEMO treats its people.
How have relationships between colleagues evolved over the years, and what role does teamwork play within the company?
WEMO strives to maintain a family-oriented culture, and for me, that has been very true, especially since my father worked here before retiring. The reason we’re able to build such amazing machines is that everyone is willing to go the extra mile for each other. If you need help, all you have to do is ask, and people are there for you. Colleagues are also involved in your life outside of work, which strengthens bonds and makes you feel like you’re part of a real team.
How do you think WEMO will continue to stand out in the market in the future?
WEMO is known for its customer-focused, custom machines, while competitors often rely on standard solutions. This gives WEMO a strong edge—if no one else can or dares to take on a project, customers come to WEMO. Here, they’ll always find a solution.
